You may instinctively do a double take when you hear a lighthouse has been turned into a character. In fact, lighthouses across Japan are being given human form one after another in a historical entertainment project called "AKARI NO MORIBITO (Guardians of Light)." The concept of this project is that "souls" reside in lighthouses to protect Japan from disasters at sea on the stage of modern Japanese history. This concept gives a slightly NANAME-UE unexpected perspective on lighthouses.

One of the characters of AKARI NO MORIBITO (Guardians of Light) is Yushima Lighthouse on Yushima here. Located on the west side of the island about 20 minutes on foot from Yushima Port, this lighthouse was first turned on in 1916. It is 12 meters tall with a 39-meter-high light. The contrast between the blue sky and the white tower is beautiful. You can even see Mt. Unzen-Fugendake and the World Heritage Hara Castle Ruins from the surrounding area. This makes it a spot which combines history and superb views.

It was selected as a "Koisuru Todai (Lighthouse of Love)" by the Nippon Romanticist Association in 2016. This has led to it becoming a sacred place for romance. In addition, cat illustrations befitting Yushima, Island of Cats, are drawn around the lighthouse. These illustrations delight visitors.

This Yushima Lighthouse character is a gentle-looking young man with a cat on his left arm. The character was created based on the image of Amakusa Shiro. AKARI NO MORIBITO (Guardians of Light) is an entertainment project to turn lighthouses around Japan into characters based on the creation of original stories. It is a part of the Sea and Japan Project from the Nippon Foundation. The aim of this project is to spread the appeal of lighthouses all over Japan and to get people interested in them. A manga series is also planned for the future. It is hoped that the characters will be used in lighthouse audio guides, panels and more! Please come and experience for yourself what lighthouses are like today. It will truly exceed (NANAME-UE) your expectations!

The 'Tora-san of Amakusa' Jumps out at You from the Screen!

The "Tora-san of Amakusa" Jumps out at You from the Screen!

The "Tora-san of Amakusa," who looks exactly like the Tora-san character from the Japanese movie series Otoko wa Tsurai yo, awaits travelers in Kamiamakusa. His appearance, which makes it look like Tora-san has jumped out at you from a television or screen, means he is a high-level look-a-like. He looks just like the real Tora-san even down to the position of the mole on his face. He voluntarily participates in events held in Shibamata, Katsushika-ku every year and is sometimes asked by people to take his photograph with them. This means he truly embodies an attitude that greatly exceeds (NANAME-UE) expectations in Kamiakusa!
